Holy shit, Ireland! You suck!

 

This is Savita Halappanavar, a 31 year old dentist who made the fatal mistake of having a miscarriage in Ireland.  She was 17 weeks along, when nature decided the baby wasn’t going to make it, and triggered a miscarriage.  Nature isn’t as accurate as an abortionist with a syringe loaded with sodium pentathol, however, and there was still a fetal heartbeat despite the fact that Savita was clearly miscarrying.

 

JudgyBitch is grateful she lives in a country where women who are having miscarriages are treated as MEDICAL EMERGENCIES.  This exact thing happened to me.  16 weeks into a much wanted pregnancy, I began to experience contractions and severe lower back pain.  When I started bleeding, I knew what was happening, and when I called my midwife and reported the degree of blood loss, she told me to put down the phone and call for an ambulance.  By the time the paramedics arrived, I had lost three litres of blood (I had extra due to the pregnancy, but that’s still a serious amount of blood to lose) and my blood pressure was 60/40 when I was loaded onto a stretcher.

 

At the hospital, it took several minutes to locate a vein (they had all collapsed) and the situation was so dire, freezing cold blood was poured into me.  The ER staff had no time to warm it, so I went into hypothermic shock on top of everything else.  The baby and a whole lot of other stuff was still inside me, so I was taken to the OR for an emergency D&C to prevent the possibility of infection and blood poisoning.

 

 

Had I been in Ireland, I’d be dead.  The ER staff in Ireland did NONE of the above for Savita.  They let her die, because apparently, that’s what the imaginary friend who makes the rules over there wanted.  Never mind the fact that Savita and her husband Praveen have an entirely different set of imaginary friends who think it’s really cool to help sick people and you know, LET THEM LIVE.

Savita had a miscarriage!  Her body decided ALL ON ITS OWN that her baby was not going to live.  Savita and her husband both agreed that once her body had made that decision, it was time to save her life by removing the products of conception so that Savita might live.  Neither Savita nor Praveen had any interest in killing their own child.  The baby was deemed unacceptable by Savita’s body, and nature took its course, as it is wont to do.

 

Calling Savita’s miscarriage an abortion and holding her up as some kind of martyr to the right to murder is unbelievably insensitive and awful and just horrifying.  No doubt, there ARE women who die because they have been denied an abortion, and that’s fucking tragic, too.  But Savita isn’t one of them.

 

She died because assholes in Ireland think running a country based on the rules of an imaginary friend is a good idea.  Way to go, Ireland.  How about trading in for a new imaginary friend?  You know, one who thinks love and forgiveness and kindness and compassion and acceptance is the way to go.  I hear there’s one called “Jesus”.  You might want to look into that.
