Amelia Earhart: turning marriage into a plane wreck!

So Amelia Earhart’s letter to her soon to be husband George Palmer Puntnam (whom she lovingly refers to as GPP – how touching!) has been unearthed and is being touted over at Double X blog on Slate as a very “modern” pre-nup and a feminist vision of marriage!

I’ll break it down for you: in a spectacularly petulant and whiny tone, Amelia says “oh, alright George, I’ll marry you, but I intend to continue fucking other people, I won’t let our relationship interfere with work and I’m probably outta here in one year.”

How charming.

Leaving aside what in the hell could possibly be wrong with George to want such a woman, how is this in any way a “modern” vision of a feminist marriage? I wonder how delighted feminists would be if it had been GEORGE who wrote that letter? “Oh, alright, Amelia, I’ll marry you, but I intend to continue fucking other people, I won’t let our relationship interfere with work and I’m probably outta here in one year.”

Oh yeah? Hey, fuck you George!

Listen, I have no problem with people who are in monogam-ish relationships. If screwing other people is part of your marriage vows, well, good for you. As long as both parties are into it, it’s no one’s business but your own. But the concept of fidelity in marriage is NOT medieval, and something that oppresses either men or women. Personally, I have no real issue with Mr. JB if infidelity is merely entertainment, so I guess we kinda sorts DO have a monogam-ish relationship.

What I take issue with is how very cunty Earhart sounds. Now THAT is a modern vision of marriage: one in which women get to call all the shots and can nuke the relationship at any time while still walking away with the man’s cash and children. It’s profoundly selfish and cruel and more to the point, it won’t make the unhappy bitch any happier!

The truth is that one person CAN make you truly, deeply happy and that person is YOU. Wreaking the havoc and devastation of divorce will not work, if your goal is to be happy, because in addition to being a miserable cow, you will have destroyed the lives of your husband and children and know yourself to be a truly awful person. And if you’re HAPPY about that, well, your husband should probably be grateful that you’re gone.

Amelia and George DID get married, but we will never know how that turned out, although her vision of marriage as something completely disposable without responsibility or obligation outlived her, which is a damn shame. The truth is that marriage is, and remains, the very best way to build wealth, raise stable, happy and successful children and build a society and community worth living in. Cities filled with narcissistic, self-absorbed singletons are as common as dirt, and the silver lining in that cloud is that those individuals are breeding themselves out of the gene pool by not reproducing at all.

Well, good riddance I say. Amelia died alone, in a fiery plane crash, leaving no children to mourn her. And that’s how the “modern” vision of marriage will end, too.
