There are more male nurses than ever. Highly specialized, technically qualified male nurses, who get paid more than female nurses because SEXISM!

1 Mar

I don’t know why this kind of stupidity continues to amaze me, but it does.

Jezebel is running a piece talking about how men are now moving into nursing, and typically, they are kicking the ladies asses in terms of salary. Average female nurses earn $51 100 while their male counterparts earn $60 700.

Cue the screaming morons!

Here’s a comment at Jezebel from concretewalls, although concretebrains might be more accurate:

I don’t understand. Do employers sit down and look at names and dock pay if they are female? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? I mean the thought process would have to be right from the start. “Oh, Suzy started today, since she has a vagina, she is therefore not going to do work as well as someone with a penis, therefore she will only make 31.25 an hour instead of 32 an hour.” I mean….how the fuck are employers getting away with this? HELP ME UNDERSTAND. I’m raging all the time about this. It’s like, the most dumb shit EVER to me. I will never understand how this happens or why.

OK, concretewalls, let me explain it to you.

You see, there are different kinds of nursing. They all start out as RNs, and they all have the option to continue their training into highly technical specializations. A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), for example, requires years of additional training, which is then reflected in salary. CRNA’s easily make $100 000/year and more!

male 2

Nurse Practitioners also require several years of additional training, and that certification results in higher earnings, too. Same goes for clinical nurse specialists. More training, more experience, more money.

Guess where male nurses are?

Male nurses make up 9% of the nursing population, and 41% of the CRNA population.

Take a job, pretty much any job, add complex technical specifications that take years to master, advanced training that requires years to complete, increased responsibilities and a correspondingly high salary, and abracadabra! You will begin to attract men.

There is no barrier to women proceeding through the CRNA specialization process and capturing those +$100K/year salaries.

They just don’t.

You will hear it repeated over and over again in the media that there is a wage gap between men and women and that women continue to get paid less than their male counterparts. AND THAT IS TRUE.

Big fucking deal. The real question is why?

Female doctors get paid less than male doctors. Why?

They cluster in family medicine and not pediatric cardiology

They work fewer hours

They take years off to have children

The wage gap exists because men and women make different choices about how much time to dedicate to their jobs and how much more training they are willing to acquire.

It’s the absolute height of hypocrisy for women to demand the right to compete with men head to head in every arena, and then cry like whiny suckholes when the men kick their asses.

That’s not sexism, ladies. That’s life.

It’s what happens when you try to play with the boys.

You lose.

Get used to it.

Lots of love,

Hello JB this is OT, but thought you’d like this link: The pictures are priceless (and infuriating).

    Because I enjoy my girlfriend’s strap-on?

Oh god, I hope that doesn’t mean what I think it means.

  3. AverageMarriedDad March 1, 2013 at 14:14 #

One of my good friends is a veteran and a male nurse. He works in a VA hospital here with crusty old veterans and it fits really well with his skill set and background and he excels here. Not so much with the women who get cycled through this environment trying to get a job in one of the “regular” hospitals in the area.

It’s like any vocation though- if women take time off, they lose traction compared to their same aged male counterparts who continue grinding away providing for their family during the child rearing years. It’s neither good or bad, it just happens. No reason to be pissed about it. My wife for a long time had a chip on her shoulder about the disparity in pay between men and women, but now that she’s making more than me, there hasn’t been a peep about that (both in STEM professional fields).

  4. Maureen from Canada March 1, 2013 at 14:42 #

So true – I was in the hospital for 6 days before Christmas for surgery (all is well) but listening to the female nurses talk about their job was an interesting experience. None wanted to work ‘difficult’ shifts as in weekends/holidays/evenings because they wanted to be with their families (good for them, but then they don’t get the ‘extra’ pay that comes with those shifts); two were discussing an opportunity to move from general duty nursing into being a surgical nurse (which here in Canada every health district is crying out for so they can at least pretend to be addressing the waitlists for surgery so they are willing to pay for the training) but neither one of them liked the idea of having to go back to school to ‘learn more’. One was complaining that she wanted to go back to community health nursing because the job was easier, had regular hours, but then she would lose her shift premiums.

Clearly that group of nurses wanted the high pay, lots of time off and not really a hard job – their job while I was there was to take temps/blood pressure, give medicine, help us to the bathroom, and adjust our blankets for the first couple of days after surgery and then they demanded that we do it ourselves (which is good since you need to be up and moving after surgery).

  5. robertcrayle March 1, 2013 at 15:01 #

Someone might point out to Monsieur that if he kept his sex life to himself no-one would be able to care one way or another?

  6. Marlo Rocci March 1, 2013 at 15:46 #

Just because men earn more because they had more training isn’t going to stop the lawsuits over the wage gap. Here’s how I expect this to play out: Someone sues to “equalize” the wages, men realized that getting the extra training won’t result in higher income, they stop getting the extra training, and “surprise”: a shortage in the more technical fields of nursing.

Feminists seem to think that men are incredibly stupid, and that we’ll happily continue to do the heavy lifting of society as the benefits for doing so get stripped away,. I guess they’ve seen too many of those “dumb husband, smart wife” commercials on TV.

  7. sqt March 1, 2013 at 15:49 #

*Sigh* That’s just….ugh. And those men look like the feminist “type.” So young and so castrated…

  8. Liz March 1, 2013 at 15:52 #

A woman I worked with last year makes six figures as a “regular RN” (though there are special pays depending on skill level, even for the basic RN). But she works her ass off and never sees the kids. She’s in a situation where both sets of families live close by so it’s the grandparents and husband who are raising them. She’s good with that, I woudn’t be (though I would probably still work parttime if I had the option to live near family).

The basic salary/training aren’t the only variables, different shifts usually pay more, then holidays pay great (as someone mentioned above). Furthermore, everything over 36 hours per week goes into overtime and that’s time and a half at most facilities. Makes a huge difference depending on how much time one is willing to work.

  9. Alex March 1, 2013 at 15:56 #

you would think with women being as smart and capable as they are proclaimed to be, that they would’ve cottoned on to why men make more. i wouldn’t be surprised if single fathers still made more, even with young children, rare as that is. so much for the masses of women being smart and bright.

  10. Kai March 1, 2013 at 17:45 #

The wage gap is simple to me. Men and women are COMPENSATED equally for their work when in equal positions, but men commonly work for higher-compensated positions, and when in the same level, women often choose to receive compensation that doesn’t come in the form of cash. Men seek money, women seek shorter hours, more flexible hours, time off, easier or more emotionally-fulfilling jobs, etc.
You don’t get equal pay + added benefits, but it’s not surprising that women are making that demand – this is, after all, the same group who wants equality + added specialness.

  11. TMG March 1, 2013 at 17:58 #

The propaganda and lies aren’t stupid, it is coldly calculated and effective. Unfortunately it also removes agency and adult accountability from women and seriously harms men, but most women enthusiastically embrace both of those results.

  12. angelowal March 1, 2013 at 19:47 #

I’m so tired of columnists citing cherry-picked statistics to back up their personal agendas. I’m even more tired of knee jerk ninnies who take the bait and swallow it, aaargh!

Thanks JB for clarifying so many subjects for your readers. Now if only you could proliferate that common sense wisdom. We need to get you more hits on this site!

  13. Navian March 1, 2013 at 20:28 #

You nailed it in my view, succinctly written with good references to destroy the emotive/victim world view.Sarcasm to delineate that the fembot mob has no common sense and either does not have the capacity of or makes no attempt at reason.
Humor, the image of the sob-sister in the red tank top cracked me up.

  14. Ter March 1, 2013 at 21:12 #

Thanks for the article – and for concretewalls’ comment that typifies feminst reasoning. Instead of examining relevant factors of a situation (in this case, the different types of nursing, requirements, responsibilities and corresponding pay grades), she proceeds straight to ‘…because vagina!’

It seems that Jezebel is a shrine to feminist stupidity for all to see – just in case anyone had any doubts. I’m still laughing over their recent article on ‘women need to fart more liberally’. I can see that you’re never going to be short on material. Not that Jezebel is the only source (not by a l-o-n-g shot), but a handy ‘go to’ source for last-minute ideas 😉

  15. Ashley March 1, 2013 at 23:23 #

So in other words, women need step it up in the work world to get paid the same wage as men. This is already in progress.

  16. Liz March 2, 2013 at 00:45 #

Yech is right. THAT is what passes for an Oxford man these days? Holy crap. This just might be one of the seven seals of the apocalypse.

  17. realityforever March 2, 2013 at 01:51 #

Really. My company has hundreds of companies of every industry imaginable as clients with with countless women working for them & I don’t see any evidence of that at all. It’s true that more women go to college, but they simply major in fluff like journalism or ‘dance’ that only guarantees them a job at Wendy’s. And as she was stating, are unwilling to go back to school to advance in the professions that actually are legitimate. That’s the ugly truth no one’s talking about.

The very core of Feminism is to get something for nothing- to try and cheat the system – to ‘succeed’ without all of the work or risk or taking to the truly challenging areas of study such as technology that is our future.

If anything I see women becoming even more intrenched in their mule-like stubbornness to refuse to dedicate themselves more or to accept more responsibility or accountability. They want the opposite – a title and status but a life of leisure with endless vacations and reduced hours and demands. Not to mention their overall attitude of ‘fuck you’ to authority and employers.

  18. realityforever March 2, 2013 at 01:56 #

Yes, that is the result of 16 years of browbeating all the masculinity out of them by wretched, male hating, female educators. From all the research I’ve done, it appears that all that started right about the time I was finishing with college in the 80s. Thank GOD I missed all of that.

I have a son who went to school in a small Texas town in the 90s and he turned out alright. They don’t have much tolerance for political correctness in places like that.

  19. Wilson March 2, 2013 at 03:28 #

Women of course will still be allowed to be paid more than men, so they’ll be in demand for those jobs. Costs will increase and productivity will decline, but the increase in equality will be worth it

  20. Mark March 2, 2013 at 05:13 #

In other words, they object to the fact that emergency room nurses (mostly men) get paid more than other nurses, even though it is a more stressful and demanding job.

I suppose heart surgeons are discriminating against general practitioners by making more money than them too? GPs should sue the American Heart Association for suppoerting cardiologists. How dare people who work harder or more often or endure greater risk or stress or require more skill earn more money than others. How dare they?

I hope ‘concretewalls’ is a high school dropout. I hope to God she doesn’t have a college degree or a decent job; such a waste it would be. Such a person is fit only to dig ditches or hand out ketchup at McDonald’s for a living.

  21. Mark March 2, 2013 at 05:36 #

I didn’t read them. Did someone actually write that? I thought penetration was inherently demeaning and necessarily constitutes rape? Looks like some feminists aren’t reading enough Andrea Dworkin. Or maybe ‘it’s not wrong when a woman does it.’

Interesting jurisprudence question. If a woman forcibly penetrates a man anally with an object, is it rape? I’m sure the de facto answer is no, but just curious…. you know, just in case I ever see a feminist approaching me from behind with a cucumber.

  22. Mark March 2, 2013 at 05:43 #

There are plenty of fields where women make more than men (all other factors held constant), including several types of engineering I believe. But I’m sure the rationalization for it is that women need to be compensated for all they lost out on during the era of egregious patriarchy.

In other words, it’s gender revanchism. Too bad it’s reparation for a crime that never really happened.

  23. Liz March 2, 2013 at 11:54 #

As of December of 2011, the answer is yes. The definition of rape is now “Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

But up until that date the FBI definition was exclusive to female victims of males only…even members of the same sex were excluded (a male could nor rape another male, nor a female another female, those were classified as sexual assaults, not rape).

  24. realityforever March 2, 2013 at 13:50 #

There was a situation a few years ago in Toronto, Canada (Communist Hellhole that country is) that should be a Dr. Seuss style children’s story as to why Socialism, Communism, Feminism or any ISM doesn’t work and easily explains to all the mentally deficient Feminists why there is a pay ‘gap,’ because the story is so simple.

The female city employees were complaining that all of the male city employees who were bricklayers were being paid twice as much as they were in their nice & comfy heated office buildings shuffling papers back and forth. Uh, funny side note, all of the bricklayers were male & most of the office workers were female – I guess that was just some kind of coincidence.

I mean, it just wasn’t fair.. they were all city employees, so WHY should the bricklayers be paid more than them? That’s ‘discrimination’ against women. Well, after a couple of years of their incessant whining, the city finally capitulated and raised the salaries of all the other city employees to that of what the bricklayers were paid.

The second this was announced, all of the bricklayers immediately applied for all the easier city jobs that paid exactly the same, and easily transferred, which wasn’t that difficult to do since they were already city employees. Why stand outside all day in the subzero Canadian weather doing hard manual labor when you can make the exact same salary indoors with a cushy office position with no stress or strain? Anyone who would’ve stayed on working as a bricklayer would have had to have been a complete moron.

So now the City of Toronto had no bricklayers, so the only choice left was to hire private contractors which is now going to cost the city twice as much as what they had been paying their own bricklayers. So next, the city was then forced to have to pay the bricklayers EVEN MORE than they HAD been paying them before as an incentive to get them back to work laying bricks! The City of Toronto could have saved itself a whole lot of trouble and a whole lot of money if they had just ignored all of the childish whining in the first place.

So pay attention boys and girls, this is why there is will always be a pay ‘gap’ and why Communism/Socialism/Feminism never works. You can’t just simply expect someone else to work harder than you with no incentive.

Of course all the female employees started whining again and continue to whine to this day and will never stop whining. It just never ends. What I can never figure out is, are all of these women really that stupid that they don’t understand why there is a pay ‘gap,’ or are they just pretending to be that stupid? I mean seriously, it’s all a con job, right? I mean it HAS to be an act- NO ONE could possibly be that stupid to not understand something so simple.

  25. Mike Hunter March 2, 2013 at 14:59 #

Any study that looks at pay differentials by gender that doesn’t control for other factors such as: occupation, education, experience, number of continuous years on the job, hours per month worked, travel, exposure to danger, or a multitude of other factors is bullshit!

When economist do actually publish studies that control for these factors they find that women make as much, or more then men do. That’s why recent female college graduates in urban areas out earn their male counterparts. Because they have the same level of: education, job experience, and continuous work experience; and they haven’t taken any time off to have and care for kids. Also at that point in their lives most college grads are gung ho about their careers. Give it about 4-5 years and that will change for the majority of them.

Here is an interesting fact: Women earn a higher rate of return from a college degree than men. In particular:

After controlling for various demographic factors, the researchers found that female graduates earned more than $6,500 more per year than women with just a high school diploma, and more than $4,500 more than women who dropped out of college. Male graduates, by contrast, earned only about $2,700 more than high school graduates, and about the same amount as male college drop-outs.

The findings are consistent with past research, which has showed that jobs are much more gender-segregated in low-education occupations. Female drop-outs tend to concentrate in low-paying service-sector jobs, whereas less-educated men are more likely to find work in better-paying industries such as manufacturing and construction.

So women can earn more then men. Most of them just don’t want to go into the fields that will allow them to do that. Because those jobs require either a large amount of training, and long hours. Or are dirty and dangerous.

JB, have you ever posted your retorts on Jezebel? Id love to see them try and counter it.

  27. Ashley March 2, 2013 at 19:51 #

    What is your company?
Last week I read a blog post talking about how women are working harder and longer than ever before in the office. It referenced this article:

It’s disappointing you believe the core of feminism is to get something for nothing, but it’s simply untrue.

  28. realityforever March 3, 2013 at 01:29 #

We sell software, Your first article is based on a ‘survey.’ Women are ‘saying’ they are working more hours. Unfortunately women are rarely honest about work- I had a woman try to trick me once in to going out with her by telling me she in ‘Communications.’

When I pressed her for more details, she admitted that she was a dispatcher for a trucking company. Not that it mattered to me- I wasn’t interested anyway. Another woman called me just this week and said, “I understand you were asking for one of MY doctors.” I said, “oh, I see.. you own the clinic?” Then she quickly changed her story and told me she nothing more than an office manager there.

And I see this pattern all the time- women telling half-truths, lies, insinuations, or fraudulent implications when it comes to anything to do with employment, so I certainly am not going to trust them to actually tell the truth about the amount of hours they work.

In addition, I see and experience the extreme opposite everyday- women come in late, leave early- most women are out of the office by 2pm. They demand the ‘work/life’ balance thing.

And as far as Feminism being a way of cheating – absolutely! It’s all about DEMANDING respect instead of earning it- LEGALLY FORCING companies to hire them through government mandate or threat of lawsuit (better known as BLACKMAIL) instead of getting a job through merit.

Piggy backing off of men’s hard work, no accountability, no risk, no work and endless entitlements. Women just want the STATUS so they can tell everyone they’re someone important with virtually no real interest in the actual work. Women see actual work as below them and feel that we should all feel lucky that they even show up.. exactly the same attitude they bring to a marriage.

  29. MaMu1977 March 3, 2013 at 03:41 #

Jezebel swings and misses yet again.

Fun fact: a sizeable percentage of male nurses are military veterans/active or reserve duty military. The majority of those nurses have seen military combat in a medical faculty(as in, saved peoples’ lives while bullets and bombs passed over their heads like so many lethal mosquitoes.) In my decade of military service, I met a dozen military members (10 medics, 2 non-medics) who went to school, while serving used various military programs to complete their training sans working in an “active duty” environment , then returned to full active duty as officers.

    Heres the fun part-
Airman Snuffy enlists for six years.
In six years, he completes his electives and basic classes.
He re-enlists, then completes all of the other classes that can be taken on site
He applies for the USAF Bootstrap program, transitions to “Ready Reserve” status, then receives full pay while finishing his Bachelor’s/attending nursing school.
Post-accreditation, he returns to active duty with a commission and 8+ years of military service under his belt.
When his first officer’s check arrives, he receives 25-50% extra of his current rank pay (

I’ve worked with male nurses who were earning $5000+/month within days of receiving their degrees (that vaunted “Penis wielders are outearning vaginarchs with the same level of training!”, whine that jezebel sells so well.) The chief nurse at my first base was a former B-52 mechanic. In 1986, he decided that fixing planes was not for him, so he changed majors. In 1992, he became a nurse. By 1997, hed spent 4 years as a desert nurse in Iraq. By 2003, he’d spent more than a decade as an informal trauma nurse. In 2005, he was promoted to Colonel and was paid enough money to make a Jezzie cry patriarchal tears. My reporting official during my time in Afghanistan was an O-3 who was earning $6000 after taxes (Yes, 72,000/year with less than a year of wearing his bars. Sure, there were women who could have done the same, but you don’t get combat pay for scheduling children with deployments.

Anyway, it’s all a scam. Male nurses are more likely to “upgrade” to the position (whether military or the “orderly to EMT *to* nurse” route, unlike most female nurses who will go directly from high school to college), which will garner higher wages by default.

The only thing women seem to do well collectively is get outraged.

  31. gwallan March 4, 2013 at 02:49 #

We had a case like this in Australia a few years ago. I won’t go into the whole tale but the young man had denied consent specifically to any anal penetration. The woman argued “accidental penetration” and the judge dropped it like a hot potato.

  32. Mike Hunter March 5, 2013 at 23:47 #

Just tell them if they want the same salary they’ll have to do the same job. Time to get off your ass and start lifting heavy things in sub-zero weather princess!

  34. Jim jones February 8, 2014 at 15:17 #

IF men get payed more, which I doubt, than women then that would be just. I do the work of three female nurses in a day. I solve problems faster, I’m stronger, my clinical skills as a male out pase any females and my compassion is equal to that of any female nurse! Female administrators are ruthless and always side with other female nurses over men! The reason nursing is still in the dark ages is do to the fact that women are not politically active. The are more subservient by nature and bend their ideals for the clicks they are part of. If the > 200,000,000 nurses were male we would be running the hospitals not the business minded CEO or CNO and not the doctors. Sure any female RN that reads this will be angree, but think about the work you do at home verses your husband. He does more or just as much. All of this liberal feminist crap suppresses progression in nursing and society. I can go on but I better stop here.

  35. Jack Strawb January 7, 2015 at 00:25 #

Yes. Reparations are a constant implication in feminist thought but I can’t recall reparations ever explicitly stated as such.
