Leaving aside the blatantly obvious fact that YOU CANNOT BLOCK PORN FROM THE INTERNET, what is the rationale behind this futile effort? Oh, I’m so glad you asked.
Explicit images of men and women having whatever kind of sex you can possibly imagine HURTS WOMEN. By depicting women as sexual creatures, it invites other people men to see women as sexual objects. Now, if you’re going to use your sexuality to get ahead at the office, that’s okay. You go, girl! But if your sexuality is something that men enjoy for their own pleasures, well that is just OUTRAGEOUS!
Now relax, ladies. Women’s porn, aka the romance novel, with all the attendant rape fantasy tropes and explicit descriptions of sex and ridiculous caricatures of masculinity is not going to be included in the ban. Duh. Ladies porn doesn’t harm men by relying on hyperbolic images of men as natural rapists with well-muscled biceps and tons of cash. That’s just innocent fantasy. There’s no way real, actual women would treat men as natural rapists who should all be sporting six-packs and throwing their hard-earned dollars at women.

It mystifies me how women can possibly think that the experience of sexuality is their sole domain to define. It seems to me that calls to ban pornography, when pornography is defined as something that harms WOMEN specifically, are really efforts to control and regulate male sexuality.
Even if we COULD control the sexuality of 50% of the population, do we really want those particular women in charge? Ugh. I have a feeling their version of acceptable sexual behavior would be something less than fun.

The first time I pointed out to a woman that romance novels are women’s pornography she went hysterical, which led me to think she was a fan of them. Now when I go into a bookstore I always look at the size of the romance section compared to the others – it’s the biggest by far. You add science fiction, westerns and mysteries together and it might be as big as the romance section.

I do think the internet porn of today is BAD. So here’s a problem with this frequently overlooked. The broader the material covered by censorship laws, the greater the problem is in enforcing those laws, and the larger the police for you need. The more officers you assign to fight adult pornography, the fewer officers you have left to fight child pornography. That’s right folks. While you are fighting for your female entitlement, you’re putting children at risk. While police a busy trying to delete all the penthouse pets of the world off the net, they’re going to miss a few 9 year olds. That’s a hell of a price to pay.

I’m a big fantasy reader and one thing I’ve noticed among the feminist crowd is that they’re really touchy about the subject of romance novels. They go on and on about how women need to have a larger presence in genres like fantasy and especially scifi– you know, we can’t have those awful men having too much influence in that arena. But when you tell them that women already own the romance arena, and therefore have a giant presence in literature (of a sort) they get really irate as if romances don’t count. But, like you point out, the romance aisle is huge and, frankly, it seems to be what women really want to read.

I write fantasy. Women tend to have a huge presence, there. Science Fiction? Not so much, especially not the hard science scifi, outside of Andre Norton. There’s a lot more women in the sociological scifi–Anne McCaffrey with her Pern books springs to mind.

The reason smut is appealing, is because lecturesome women who take-take-take and yield nothing are NOT appealing. Especially as far as emotional attachment is concerned. I think it’s even simpler. When they think that they’re competing with a partial substitute to their power over men, they think their stock is dropping, so to speak. And it does.
The conventional reaction is elementary, unfeasible, and an affront to personal liberty, namely, to have the law control what they don’t like. I’m sorry if they don’t like something, but that in and of itself doesn’t mean it’s worth my effort to do anything about it.

There are a few big names among female fantasy writers (J.K. Rowling comes to mind) but the big complaint seems to be that not men aren’t reading female writers as often as they “should” be.
About a year ago some female bloggers took it upon themselves to chart how many books by female authors had been reviewed among genre blog reviewers. My blog was included in the tally and judged to be weighted too heavily to the side of reviewing male authors in favor of female ones. (I have two male reviewers who post on my site). Their conclusion was that not enough bloggers were reading and reviewing female authors and we needed to change our ways. My argument was (and is) that we can’t and shouldn’t try to force men to read anything- especially when women often write stories that have more appeal to other women (an example would be urban fantasy with its frequent romance angle).
The debate goes round and round with all the women’s “advocate” types saying that men are just misogynistic and ignoring female authors.

There needs to be distinction between visual pornography (usually for me) and emotional pornography (usually for women).
Aside from the objectification issues of visual pornography, there is also the criticism that visual pornography creates an unrealistic expectation of sexuality.
Emotional pornography, aside from objectifying men through masculine archetypes, creates unrealistic expectations of romance and relationships.
There is another category of pornography for women and that’s straight up erotic fiction – literotica.com and 50 Shades come (heh) to mind.

Stumbled onto your blog just a few minutes ago via your newest Youtube vid. Finally got to an article I disagree with!
I am all for free speech. I am all for people doing whatever they like in private, or even filming it and putting it on the internet. But I don’t feel that it should be so freely accesible as it is now to the younger generations. I am not for women being trafficked, prostitutes having to “move up” by getting into porn, women being raped by producers as their “audition”, the drug and alcohol abuse, or the physical and emotional toll a lot of these ladies put themselves through. And this is stuff I have researched and learned just within the past week.
There is a segment within the AE industry that is deeply misogynist to the point violence, dehumanization, abuse and emotional distress is seen as sexual expression. That beautiful women should be treated in that manner because “all men want to get back at the women they could never have”. We’re talking some deep, twisted psychology these people carry around and perpetuate.
Sad to say, but porn addiction is a reality as well. Why do you think so many men are on Viagra? Because they have trained their brains to only respond to pictures and videos and are too stupid to even realize what they have done to themselves.
Porn is good in moderation, when used within the context of a healthy, happy relationship and where it is not hidden as some deep, dark secret thing that goes on behind closed doors. It can and is a huge cause for divorce, and sad to say, a large portion of the female population dislikes it in one way or another.

Too many times I’ve been subject to porn unwittingly while surfing regular non-porn sites, that to with small children nearby or sitting right with me.
While people who want it should have access if they want, those of us who don’t want it should not have to be subject to it.
Its incredibly harmful for children and child porn is often down on the list as porn addictions call for more and more extreme images in order to “get off”.
Child porn should be banned, well it already is, I hope. Adult porn? Opt in or opt out.
