Guilty of underage drinking and public intoxication.
500 hours of community service and no further sanctions.
Who thinks this is fair and reasonable?
Can we please bring some sanity back to the idea of justice? Just a little.

Just to add, I’d say about 6 months in the juvenile pen and another six house arrest. I don’t think community service is enough because it sends the message that community service covers the behavior and it doesn’t. This behavior should be strongly discouraged (but it shouldn’t be a completely life ruining event).

I’ve mentioned before a month in the country lockup would do those boys a world of good. One of my friends got a month for stealing a woman’s purse. He said for a month the highlight of the day was getting a glass of orange juice.
He never stole anything ever again.

I think I’m on the same page as you Liz.
There’s so much to this story and, because it’s more complex than a few kids getting trashed and being stupid, it can’t be treated too lightly. Ultimately the boys did themselves in by not only being stupid- but filming themselves being stupid and calling it rape on camera. Honestly I think they should be held accountable for their indifference and disregard for the human being they were dragging around. Yes the girl is responsible for her own behavior, but being humiliated on camera seems like more than punishment enough to me.
Community service seems like a celebrity non-punishment to me. Get caught drunk driving while famous? Say you’re sorry and do community service and all is forgiven…

Yeah, gotta count me in on that one. These guys, even in their state of intoxication, knew they were committing a crime and did so with intent.
Girl’s crime was underage drinking, public intoxication (and being a dipshit, but that’s not a crime, and the video more or less takes care of that).
I don’t ever want to see CS as the sole penalty for sexual assault. Sexual assault, even if it’s juvenile asshattery like this, is just too serious for that.
1 year juvenile incarceration with eligibility for parole/release after 6mos. Additionally, 1000 hours of community service per charge (public intox, explicit pictures of a minor, sexual assault).
For the gal: 100 hours community service, explicitly to rub salt in the wound and send that message about public intoxication.

I’m not sure how many hours public and underage intoxication deserves, but they both get that. And then yep, I’m on board with happycrow and Liz’s general idea.
Young guys may be relatively stupid, but I think more of young guys than to assume it’s simply a reasonable consequence that any of them would sexually assault a girl just because she’s there and their judgement is somewhat impaired.

It’s a tough call … especially for ME, I am the mom of 6 daughters. What would I want to happen if it were one of MY daughters? Well, I’d want my daughters to NOT ever be in the situation. Sounds too easy? Well it is NOT. It takes a lot of parenting; a lot of conversations and a lot of ‘in your (their) face’ time imparting real world actions and consequences. I would be destroyed if it were my daughter, yes. BUT — I don’t WANT the court system trying to legislate decision making … it is a fine line between holding the boys in this case responsible for what we can ALL agree was terrible decision making and holding Joe Blow responsible for something that only HALF of us think is punishable. A fine line that is easily blurred. She made a terrible decision. The boys made a terrible decision. My call? Boys: 1 year in Juvenile Hall to send the message it was not socially acceptable. Girl: 3 months of inpatient treatment for alcohol use/abuse and 9 months of community service. BOTH made bad choices.

given it’s a small town, community service would be enough for the guys to learn their lesson. and i hope that girl’s parents make sure she doesn’t touch a bottle till she’s 21. calling what they did rape is way too overboard, especially since if that video wasn’t there we could say she sat on a bedpost, more along the lines of mild sexual assault (yes, there’s a mild version of sexual assault, the events are an example). hope she finds out just how much those boys’ lives were ruined cause she called rape instead of sexual assault. they can pin that on being young and stupid, no one will listen to the defense of rape

This was no uncertain he-said/she-said situation. the girl was passed out unconscious when they decided to violate her.

3 months inpatient for alcohol abuse after a night of blackout drinking? You really will be sending half the population away.
Unless you’re defining use AS abuse, chances are this girl is no alcoholic. She drinks because she wants to and everyone she sees is doing it.
I have no problem punishing her and everyone else for drinking illegally (my thoughts on that law aside), but declaring her in need of rehab is surprising.

An teenage girl binge drinking to unconsciousness seems to me like a good indicator of alcoholism. I don’t know her whole history, but in my experience (people I know, that is; I don’t drink) such incidents aren’t usually isolated. Without considerable intervention (and that would of course mean acknowledging that there was something wrong with her behavior, so it probably won’t happen), she will likely do the same thing again at some other party in the future, maybe at college, where there is even less supervision and accountability.

Yeah, it probably will happen again. But it will probably again be a deliberate choice because she wants to, not because she can’t function without the alcohol.
If you want to change the normalcy of that form of alcohol abuse, you’d have to change our entire culture of drinking.
