Delicate flower has sensibilities offended. Gets ass handed to her.

adria

Adria Richards got her panties bunched up nice and tight when she overheard a couple of guys making a dongle joke while attending a PyCon conference as a PR rep for her company, SendGrid.

What the hell is a dongle?

don·gle

/ˈdäNGgəl/

noun

A device that is connected to a computer to allow access to wireless broadband or use of protected software.

dongle

Say it a few times.  Dongle, dongle, dongle.  Sound like dong, like schlong, like a dick joke waiting to happen. It would have taken me about two seconds to start talking about big dongles and little dongles and whether the size of the dongle matters, but I’m crass like that.

hard

Not Adria Richards.  Why, she overheard a dongle joke and the petals of her exquisite flower simply crumpled in dismay and outrage and a deep sense of having being personally violated.  So she turned around in her seat and snapped a shot of the dongle-jokers and then tweeted it with a request to the conference organizers to remove the offending cretins from her sight.

wilted

Some reports say that the troglodyte dick-jokers WERE removed from the conference, and some say no, but what IS clear is that one of the punsters was FIRED FROM HIS JOB because his little dick joke offended fragile little Adria.

jokers

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/how-dongle-jokes-got-two-people-fired-and-led-to-ddos-attacks/

Over-reaction, much?

Some people at paste-bin thought so, and decided that the only reasonable course of action was to have Adria fired, too.  A group of clearly talented hackers went in and crashed  SendGrid, where Adria works and within hours the management team at SendGrid acted in the company’s best interest and fired Adria.

http://topsy.com/pastebin.com/JaNh0w5F

The whole sorry episode is now being cast as some kind of witch-hunt against Adria for speaking out against sexism in the tech world.  That is the part of this story I would like to address.

joan

Naturally, Jezebel has picked up the story, and spins it hard to cast Adria as a brave heroine defending herself against the mean, scary men who are creating a hostile work environment for her with their offensive dick-jokes and general misogyny.

http://jezebel.com/5991792/woman-in-tech-tweets-about-sexist-dudes-in-tech-dude-get-fired-internet-meltdown-ensues

Without the slightest hint of irony, Lindy West writes:

Regardless of what you think of the joke itself, it is sexist to contribute (willfully or cluelessly! Ignorance is not an excuse!) to a hostile work environment for women. Full stop. If you didn’t realize you were doing it, that means you haven’t bothered to think critically about women’s comfort and needs.

No seriously.  Attention all men everywhere, but especially you men working in tech fields:  you need to stop thinking about the subject at hand (dongle dongle dongle schlongle dongle), stop considering your own needs and comfort and start thinking about women’s comfort and needs.

Because we all know women get to define what constitutes an appropriate work environment, what behavior and language is considered polite and acceptable and if a lady is offended then the entire world must screech to a halt to address that tragedy.

offended

Because equality.

Yeah, there’s nothing sexist AT ALL about claiming that women have the right to go through life without being offended by anything ever, and it’s certainly not the woman’s job to get over her shit.  No way!  If I am offended, it can’t be because I’m an emotional cripple incapable of dealing with the occasional dick-joke (that wasn’t even aimed my way)!  Nope.  It’s because men suck and I demand that you all stop sucking right now!

This would be an excellent moment to insert a dick-joke, but I might faint when my lady brain comprehends the full extent of what I just wrote.

fainting

Now, let’s be clear:  the reaction to Adria’s little tantrum over some guy making a dongle-joke was completely over the top.

http://www.dailydot.com/society/pycon-dongle-joke-misogyny-sexism-adria-richards/

Threatening to rape or murder someone, or suggesting they go kill themselves is some pretty awful stuff, but there is nothing inherently sexist about any of that.  That’s pretty equal opportunity awfulness.  Adria wasn’t targeted BECAUSE she’s a woman.  She was targeted because she had a hissy fit that resulted in someone losing their job!  Over a dick-joke!  And it turns out that Adria makes dick jokes herself, and that little bit of hypocrisy sent her critics over the edge.

dick joke

What IS sexist is Adria deciding that the simple fact of owning a vagina gives her the right to decide what is and is not funny in any given situation.  Waltzing through life believing you are owed special consideration because you are a WOMAN and you deserve to never be offended is sexist.  Why should anyone believe they have the right to never be offended?

The man who made the dongle joke actually apologized for his “insensitivity”, which is kind of a shame.  He should have told her to go dongle herself.  Adria over-reacted to a conversation that she wasn’t even part of that resulted in a man being fired, and then boo-hoo’d her way across the internet when the same thing was done to her.

My friends and I had decided forking someone’s repo is a new form of flattery (the highest form being implementation) and we were excited about one of the presenters projects; a friend said “I would fork that guys repo” The sexual context was applied by Adria, and not us.

My second comment is this, Adria has an audience and is a successful person of the media. Just check out her web page linked in her twitter account, her hard work and social activism speaks for itself. With that great power and reach comes responsibility. As a result of the picture she took I was let go from my job today. Which sucks because I have 3 kids and I really liked that job.

She gave me no warning, she smiled while she snapped the pic and sealed my fate. Let this serve as a message to everyone, our actions and words, big or small, can have a serious impact.

Turnabout is fair play, cupcake.

Whether or not the tech field is hostile to women is not the point, although if the few women who are in the field act like Adria, it’s little wonder they meet with hostility.  The real issue here is women feeling like they have the right to define social interactions with only their own comfort and needs in mind.  On the one hand, women demand to be treated as equals, and then on the other hand, they want special consideration for their overwrought sensitivity to things like dick-jokes.

Deciding that you can police the conversations of others, and attempting to enforce your own aesthetic sense of what constitutes appropriate behavior for no reason other than you are a woman and you feel offended?  Now that is sexist.

Looks like the tech world took a few steps to address sexism:  Adria Richards is out of a job. I’d say she dongled herself quite nicely.

Lots of love,

JB

Having been in similar situations as the man who apologized, there’s really no other option than to apologize while denouncing the other persons actions. At least, not if you want your job back or to look rehireable for another company. No matter whether you were right or not (if a womans involved you usually are but are seen as wrong) you apologize. If you actually argue or fight it, the woman will always win. Why?

And this is why men aren’t welcoming to women. Because women fuck over men.
She better not ever venture past a climbing crag. We have nuts that we slide into cracks, jugs that make it easier to get up, and everyone’s admiring someone else’s rack. And I don’t know who started it, but someone the expected response to a well-tied knot became “I’d do that”.
It’s not like this was in the workplace with men hassling her. They were talking among themselves, and sharing a private joke whose context she didn’t understand.
If you can’t take hearing a little entertaining juvenility in public, it’s up to you to move.

LOL, “This would be an excellent moment to insert a dick…” Whaaa??? I had to stop in mid sentence there because I almost fainted, too.

Also, wanted to let you know that it’s not just women in tech that need to fear the dongle. They have many applications and are used successfully on a regular basis by folks in many different positions, we are so accustomed to using them where I work, our entire load of dongle jokes is spent, and as a result, we now take our dongles very seriously and prefer our offensive jokes to be reserved for items like automated lubrication of multiple units and heavy duty rod inserts.

Poor little Adria would lose her mind in a manufacturing plant. We all know that our innuendo is juvenile and silly, but it helps to make the day go by faster and keeps our sanity intact. “Insert the dongle into the material handling unit.” is just an instruction given in a forklift Operator’s Manual until someone says, “That’s what she said.” and then we all roll our eyes and move the hell on!

The fact that a woman can just overhear a conversation and get a man (father of 3 no less) fired just makes me sick. Even if the conversation was offensive (and this doesn’t sound as if it was anything other than harmless joking) it wasn’t directed at her. I’m very glad this blew back on her, but I’ll feel a lot better when I hear that the guy has another job.

The tech field is full of betas, more by design than anything else: brainy types who spend more times with inanimate things will be more socially awkward than average. Combine that with women’s lesser interest and ability for STEM resulting from a very small female representation, and you have the perfect environment for the creation of white knights. So it’s not a surprise that the guy apologized, that so many came to Richard’s defense, and that she felt like she was entitled to do that in the first place. This woman got a job which is basically a glorified PR position (developer evangelist = go talk to people about what we do), surrounded by mostly men who competed with one another to make her feel like she was some sort of heroine. She even compared herself to Joan of Arc after all. I’m pretty sure she got the job because she’s a black woman, she was a perfect diversity token for a startup that wants to make itself look modern.

It’s just a common identifier. Engineers, mechanics, plumbers… pretty much anyone that makes, designs, builds or fixes things knows that “male” and “female” are common terms. Not just at work (where we build heavy equipment) but also at home doing little projects like fixing our gas grill. I needed to get a part called a “nipple” … Oh, the humanity!!! Maybe I should switch back to charcoal so I am not accused of being misogynist.

What I don’t get is why people are so quick to report everything to “authorities” instead of just facing the offender personally and telling him or her that you are offended by what he or she is saying, find it inappropriate to the venue, and ask them to stop?

Why must everything turn into a big production with posting pics on the internet, tweeting up a storm and getting people fired?

Adult up, look the individual in the eye and face him/her head on!

Or have people so lost their social skills to technology?

I think it’s more worrying that “she smiled while taking the picture”. To me, that indicates that she was not in fact all that “offended”, but that she was simply being a sadistic prick in wanting to get even for some perceived “crime” committed against her.

She clearly acted like a child. Any mature adult would just ignore the offensive remarks. For all she knows, these two guys may be the nicest guys to hang out with. Of course, she will probably never know that now.

The lesson here apparently is that men should avoid women like the plague in a work setting. No flirting and no jokes is a given. To be safe, avoid socializing with them at all. Avoid making eye contact if you can help it, as even that can be ‘hostile.’ If women demand that men treat them like social pariahs and insulate themselves entirely from women, then it is only fitting that men oblige.

Feminism has taught me that humor must properly be a man’s habit (or at least, reciprocally appreciated humor; a woman can make any joke she wants whenever she wants). I will never make a joke of any kind in the presence of a woman in a classroom or work setting. Ever. You just never know; better safe than sorry.

I say let’s take the whole ‘workplace sexual harassment’ freak show in all of it’s insanity (meaning, well, we don’t even know what the definitions are anymore- they could be anything) all the way to it’s logical conclusion – I say “full speed ahead” and make it absolutely illegal for men to even BE IN THE PRESENCE OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE AT ALL. NEW FEDERAL LAW.

So THEN what would happen next is, well, we still have to have men to do, well, you know, all the actual work (just don’t say that out loud) so we can’t simply not hire them, so THEN we would have to COMPLETELY separate men and women in the workplace- ZERO contact! Separate entrances on other sides of the building with a brick wall in between. And that would be fucking AWESOME!!!!!! SUCCESS!!!!!

No more lawsuits, 1000% increase in productivity & men could just be themselves and no more gloomy atmosphere!

Ever been sexually harassed by a woman? They have zero skills at approach of any kind of course because women are usually the ones being pursued, so what they do is try to yell and scream at you or constantly look for reasons for get you in some kind of trouble.. so in a sense you could even construe this as HER harassing THEM. Which when you really look at the face of it, that’s exactly what happened.

Please note: She was not fired because she complained about inappropriate behavior, she was fired because she violated Pycon’s complaint policy with REQUIRES CONFIDENTIALITY. This is important because sometimes it’s the complainant who is the guilty party, and Pycon’s staff was trained to deal with these situations.

Instead she went public first because it gave her an opportunity to play victim for the wymenz movement. Well, she got the attention she wanted.

But she also got something else. From now on, no woman at a conference will be trusted. Men will avoid them at all costs because we don’t know what they’re going to tweet about us publicly. If you think it was hard for women to get jobs at STEM fields before, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

There are clear cut cases of sexual harrasement and bribery in the work place but there are also cases of mild offenses that can be dealt with face to face in a firm and clear manner, that don’t have to be taken to the top or the legal authorities called.

It seems people have lost the art of social interaction and as soon as any little annoyance pops up they either take it to “authorities” or get online to electronically defame people worldwide, like Adria here did.

A lot of this stuff used to be dealt with through personal communication back in the day.

Adria is a perfect example. Instead of simply turning around in her seat, looking these men in the eyes and telling THEM that she is offended by their speech and asking the to stop, she took photos of them on her i-phone/cell phone, uploaded them to the internet and “tweeted” all sorts of nonsense.

Did the world really need to know all this?
If she was genuinely concerned and wanted it to stop she could have nipped it in the bud on the spot.
Really what she wanted was to make an online drama.

She’s probably got social avoidant personality disorder which A LOT of people have since the dawn of the internet’s electronic social networking.

Humans just don’t know how to communicate in real life anymore.

I’d write about it on my own blog, but I haven’t been able to figure out if the blog I’m linking was written by a colleague that linked it on facebook or not; so I’m steering clear of it on my own blog so as not to get ping/track backs.

Hilarious video on “How not to rape my daughter” that makes me hope she doesn’t also have a son, and that her daughter doesn’t expect much romance if she follows these rules:

An interesting look at how a liberal views ‘rape culture’ and feels entitled to stranger’s protection, and also whining about how being associated as someone’s wife, mother, daughter, or sister is dehumanizing. The little cupcake doesn’t realize that the views she perpetuates make it so that men really ONLY want to defend their mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives because of the current climate

The more I read about this Adria, the more I shake my head. She was basically a rad-fem that SendGrid hired to make themselves seem progressive. Sending a rad-fem into the geek community is a bit like sending a member of the Taliban to a rabbi convention. An explosion was going to happen. Normally I wouldn’t criticize a company on the basis of one of its employees, but they really have it coming on this one. They literally hired someone who hates men in general to speak at male dominated conferences.

This is why she smiled when she took that picture. She got what she wanted. Something to crucify a man with.

As someone who works in technology, I find it very wearing that we’re constantly accused of sexism. I don’t care what gender you are if you can handle a sql query or edit javascript. That’s all that really is important to me. The fact that men dominate the industry is neither my problem nor my fault.

For this, SendGrid really needs to be shut down. I feel sorry for the technicians there, the ones who actually do the work. But in sending a bigot to convention, they demonstrated incredibly poor judgment.

I mean dude, i get where you are coming from…but Texas doesn’t really scream land of equal opportunity to me.

back in the good ole days of comdex, which sometimes had porndex a few doors down in las vegas,
i, was a there, (late 90’s) one of the only chicks in there. Most of the
advance tech stuff, for instant communication and utilisation of MIT experiments would be at pornDex.
weird, fun, surreal…but porn in the 90’s drove that industry.

I knew i was outnumbered, but i was there because i loved beta feedback algorithms and not because i was a chick, i was there
because i believed in what we were doing and had an inherent interest in the conference and the chance to meet others that shared interests.
Sure, there were small insecurities thinking i would be seen as less cuz i was a cute bleach blonde skinny geek pixie, but at the end of the day, i knew that me and the walking ants would get along and there would be those that considered me ‘other’ or ‘outsider’ but I would and did make friends, that could see we were all the same late night socially retarded fun loving geeks.

At the time, the only women doing anything were part of the ACT lab thru MIT funding.(Sure there were more but more on creative side, this is all that comes to mind) So it was all a little cowboy,
what can we do with this…(from my young perspective at the time)

It’s life. This Aria thing, is ridiculous. I see no issue with sending a woman to a mans world. I’ve been
there done that, but you have to understand where you are. Whose house are you in? The hard core tech world is not the ‘real world”
At the end of the day when you spend your life in front of a machine, coding, creating, trying to make impossible digital scenarios work,
making funny sex jokes with technology are just simple ways of making the day to day seem a little more normal.
or a little more human. As a woman, you don’t work in tech if you are going to get offended by a simple dongle joke.

she gives women who love a dongle in their pocket a bad name.

When I was in school the worst my mom could do was come to the bus stop and tell people to “stop picking on my Elizabeta”. That was, in a word, super awesome (okay, two words). Now we have the internet.

But it’s okay, I’m sure this is really considered cool these days.

The ‘100% sober’ stipulation goes a long way toward making “true” the feminist belief that all men are rapists. Of course it would also make most women rapists too… if women could rape, of course. Apparently they can’t because they are just entitled to a man’s body.

Interesting thing is, men don’t notice (in a bad way at least) when they are going into a field in which they are a minority. The tech world is (at least for now) a predominantly male area, but put if you put a man in a predominately female field, many of the same things happen. Women also form cliques, will exclude, ignore, or ostracize the few males in their environment (and sometimes even sexually harass them); and will often preferentially support other women in both professional and social ways. Ultimately, a female-dominated workspace can be as marginalizing for men as a male-dominated one can be for women.

The thing is, few men seem to notice or care when they are surrounded by the opposite sex; we are, as a matter of fact, encouraged to think of it as a good thing. I’ve been interviewing for phd programs in a STEM field that though traditionally male, seems to be moving in the female direction (it is a biological science, so that partly explains it); at every interview event, male applicants are a minority; and whenever a male applicant would notice this, they’d just jokingly say something like ‘good ratio here, eh?’ Contrary to the claim that men feel their egos impinged by the presence of women in the workplace, I think that it is women who are more conditioned to view the opposite sex as ‘the enemy’ and to feel threatened by them; men seem (or are expected to be, at least) more comfortable in a female-dominated setting than women do in a male-dominated setting.

Of course a feminist could always chalk that up to ‘male-privilege,’ but I don’t think so. I think men are just genuinely less attentive to the disadvantages (both real and imagined) of being in the minority than women are. And why wouldn’t we be? Every woman is acutely aware of the dangers of men; few men realize how miserable a throng of women can make one’s life if they so desire.

There’s a point in that where she says ‘You should want these too.’ Yeah – men only get to ‘want’ not to be raped, while women are entitled not to be. And you know what? I was pleasantly surprised she even considered what a man might want to that limited extent.

Why not ‘How not to rape my child’? Girls – NO sexual contact with boys who you don’t know, or who don’t like you, or when they have had a drink or are not ASKING FOR IT WITH WORDS. Even if your boyfriend is naked in bed with you, don’t you touch his dick or give him a blow job unless he ASKS for that specifically – cos that’s rape. Don’t you DARE be spontaneous in bed, people!

You’d be wrong in assuming anything about Texas. Texas is almost precisely like other states now, thanks to mass internal immigration turning over our population several times, first with the military and then with NASA: that Big Bang Theory/Sheldon Cooper stuff you see about crazed Baptists running around the place? Almost entirely fiction, with just a teeny tiny smear of reality to keep up the larger fiction.

Everything you think you know about Texas is all gone: no more cowboys, no more good old boys, no one raises beef, no one fucks with oil wells. The place is moderately successful Tech utopia with hot weather now. Commie professors, Starbucks on every corner, Chinese and fake tribal tattoos on every person under 35, hipster coffee dens that would commit suicide if you called what they sold “coffee”, that’s Texas now.

Texas is Wisconsin with hotter weather now. Anyone who tells you differently, well, is a yankee.

“Interesting thing is, men don’t notice (in a bad way at least) when they are going into a field in which they are a minority.”

Depends on what type of minority they are. If they are a racial minority, then they become very self-conscious, at least here in the States. And there would have been no faster way to shut those white geeks up than by jokingly making penis size comparisons along racial lines. Like I said, Adria, like a lot of techies, lack social skills. They only know how to deal with life through electronics. She could have easily made light of the whole thing and shut them up by talking about some ex black boyfriend.

I was thinking more of when men in general are a minority. For example with universities, most of which are female-dominated now, few male students ever complain about being a minority. They only see the (largely illusory) benefits of having more women than men, as they think that means more sex for them. Women complain often when they are a minority (in the few programs that are still male-dominated); ironically, many also complain when they are a majority (too few ‘good men’ to date).

As for Richards, it would appear from her ‘tweets’ that she has little compunction about making penis jokes herself. Men just aren’t allowed to do that apparently. And I’m sure if she’d made a racial penis joke and one of them responded (as I would, but I’m white) that she must be an expert on penises as she’s probably handled more of them than Jenna Jameson. Then, of course, she would of lost it entirely I’m sure.

Banter goes both ways; but suppose a woman makes a penis-size joke to a guy, especially in a workplace? He can respond by making a slut-joke or something, but then he has to really trust that she won’t file a complaint somewhere down the road. If she does, what exactly can he say? “She started it by insulting the size of my penis!” I don’t anticipate that defense working out. Basically, all one can do in the situation is just take it without giving it back. Only way to be sure you won’t lose your job.

Whatever happened to a weak warning and get back to work?

    Well, honestly: The Internet.

The Speed of Offence went through the roof with the advent of nearly free, nearly instantaneous global communications. It doesn’t take much for a raging Internet Shitstorm to brew from a tempest in a teapot straight up to an F6 Fecal Tornado. So a lot of entities panic when they suddenly receive a lot of potentially negative press, and often tend to overreact.

Look at the Quvenzhane Onion Tweet thing. It’s just a tweet, but… these things spread, and it’s easy for them to spread far and fast. Once Richards put her pic out on Twitter, there’s almost no telling what direction it’ll fly, or how fast, or how much mass it’ll pick up on the way, or how much damage it’ll do on impact.

    Thus, rapid-firing.

Actually, that approach is going to cause trouble too. Some years ago, in Wisconsin I believe (not sure; been MANY years) a company was actually SUED because they had no females working for them. Turns out NO FEMALES HAD APPLIED. But that is irrelevant. The EEOC sued this company, and even went so far as to post in the local newspaper for any women who had even THOUGHT about applying there, that they may be entitled to compensation! End result…The company was forced to close its doors.
Likewise, I personally know, as I was stationed there at the time, of two (2) females stationed at Long Beach Naval Station SIMA, that routinely had men busted out of the Navy for sexual harassment. The MEN would have the audacity to claim that they had “slept with that woman from the bar last night.”! After 3 YEARS of this, an investigation was launched. This turned up the two women talking all day long about how big this guys cock was, and how good that guy licked their pussy. End result? Simple, the MEN who had been accused of LESS than the women were doing were booted out of the Navy. The women? They were transferred to different jobs to separate them.
Equality is just another way of saying, “I want all of your BENEFITS; but none of your drawbacks.”

.I just left this on the latest Sandman vid…

Speaking of the marketing of ideas. The use of terms is important (see “Right to Life vs. “Right to Choose”) I think we all should stop fighting “Feminism”
    1. Too close to “Female” We do not want to be like them and hate half the human race.
    2. It kind of leaves out all the Manginas.
    3. They have way too many women who identify but are “not like that”
    4. Its their term.
    5. Its not really accurate.

I like the term “Gender Marxists” much more descriptive, and negative.

Just look at Brandeis U. when it dis-invited Hersi Ali. You would think that Feminists would support a woman who fights against the real abuse women face in Islamic countries. But the President of Brandeis pulled the invite after 2 Gender Studies professors complained she was Islamophobic (Its not a phobia if your fear & loathing comes from well earned and life-long personal experience) This just shows how they will throw a sister under the bus if she conflicts with a deeper underlying political agenda, in this case “Multiculturalism

JB: “Some reports say that the troglodyte dick-jokers WERE removed from the conference, and some say no, but what IS clear is that one of the punsters was FIRED FROM HIS JOB because his little dick joke offended fragile little Adria.

–Well, in truth, he was fired because his employer was chickenshite enough to give in to the pressure created by Richards’ complaint. She was clearly being an intrusive, easily offended, self-righteous jerk. The employers actions, firing someone from a good job without cause, is in my opinion the far more egregious offense.

The price of eternal vigilance against being offended is far too high. It must involve regular censorship, charges of harassment in order to set examples, firing “offenders” in order to intimidate and to set additional examples. It’s too bad we don’t do a better job of weighing these costs and benefits at a societal level.

JB: “The real issue here is women feeling like they have the right to define social interactions with only their own comfort and needs in mind.”

I’ve posted this sort of thing on woman-friendly sites, adding that when women are content to fit in (not tolerate abuse or hostility, just fit in and not demand considerations not given to everyone else) men overwhelmingly welcome them. Writing this got me heaps and heaps of instant abuse. The women attacking me seemed absolutely desperate to believe that men really, really hate women. That men are fragile shites who can’t tolerate the presence of “strong” women, and treat any intrusion into their precious boys’ clubs as terrifying threats. This couldn’t be less true, but contemporary feminism collapses if it admits that men, by and large, like and love and enjoy women.
