New Thought Catalog piece: Casual sex is empowering and 4 other feminist lies

11 Jul

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “feminist”? For me, it’s an unattractive, angry woman who blames all her problems on men. She is single, bitter and spends most of her time showering other women with withering contempt for not making the “correct” feminist choices, whatever those happen to be. She is loud, screechy and deeply unhappy. Is that a stereotype? Of course it is. But like many stereotypes, there is just enough truth in it to make it stick.

Some good points. Feminism, I believe, is accepted by the majority of women because of the fact that it does absolve them of responsibility for their actions. That’s the one big selling point.

Also, caught this typo. “The idea of the empowered slut is deeply destructive for many women and they experience meaningless sexual encounters as, well, meaningless. Disappointing. Unfulfilling. “

Casual sex is empowering and liberating for both men and women.
The problem is when a particular woman wants to get pregnant. That means slavery to a particular man and lots of power to that particular woman.

Hi Janet, as an ex-sex worker (by choice) I have to agree with you on the subject of casual sex, strangely enough. At the beginning I enjoyed the attention of men, and of course, the money. Only two months later, I drastically decreased the number of men. I decided to keep two clients, the two loveliest ones. By only seeing them, I felt I could develop a stronger bond. And…I liked to be provided for financially. (yeah, I’m that kind of woman you’re not very fond of, I know). These relationships felt good for a while. Still, I decided to quit with everything. With all the contacts I’ve had (paid and unpaid). I’m only 20 now. But as you wrote on Thought Catalog, most women want to become a wife, and a mother of children. And that’s true for me also. I want to become financially stable first (I’m sorry for my English), but reaching ‘high tops’, and being ‘a succesful businesswoman’ was never the highest priority for me. Wel…hmm, I was, as an independant escort. I got paid royally. And yes, I was even proud of it. While now…I’m not, because all I ever wanted is to become a good wife and a good mother. Thanks for writing this entry.
