Jessica Valenti, a feminist columnist at the Guardian went on vacation this week and posted this picture on Twitter:
Let me give you some context. I’ve written about Jess before and she writes charming pieces like abortion shouldn’t be rare and is generally a really despicable person who hates half of humanity and blames all her problems and all the world’s problems on them.
So when Jess posted that picture, I needed to goad her into replying to me directly so I wouldn’t violate Twitter’s spamming rules. I used Poe’s Law to attribute a few false but utterly plausible quotes to her, and sure enough, she replied.
Jess is not terribly smart.
Now Twitter is a little outraged at Jess’ callous indifference to the suffering of men and boys and she is catching a bit of hell. Predictably, she is having a big victim party and sulking. It was just a joke, after all.

Jessica Valenti is THE ideological leader of third wave feminism. What she “accomplished” was very crude: she created and drove, nearly single handedly, what I will call “slut culture.” Anyone who wonders why they have watched their daughters stripping in the streets on international “Slut Walks,” getting banged out by charming but worthless cads and players and, often, doing porn has only one place to look.
2nd wave feminism must be dealt with as well. But at least it had some semblance of subtlety. It can be dealt with later.

I’m confused on what happened here. But it’s very hard to imagine the circumstances under which this shirt, worn specifically by Jessica Valenti, is just a joke. I like offensive jokes as much as anyone, but this one isn’t very funny, I don’t get it, and it’s coming from someone who wants the accused men to be the ones proving they got consent before sex.
But if this really is just a joke, I’m sure Jessica can explain how and convince us.

Thanks ever so much for your hard work. Glad in particular that you are taking on this vile woman. Being German and having lived in the UK I used to revere The Guardian as an intellectual newspaper but having seen her articles and those of Laura Bates it has lost all credibility for me.

Wow JB! I know you didn’t create #womenagainstfeminism but your efforts have created quite the shit-storm– and I mean that in a good way! I have been commenting on the Facebook page (in my real name– which is kind of terrifying) and the number of feminist heads exploding is a sight to behold. No feminist I have seen yet has a cognizant argument either (it’s almost always along the lines of “you don’t know what the definition of feminism is! *foot stamp*) You are a goddess for exposing feminism for the sham it is.

Depends on the circumstances, but they should be made fun of, crying achieves nothing and is for children. And, of course, I feel exactly the same way towards women who cry, although I didn’t always in the nativity of my youth.
The ridiculous gender role is not that men aren’t allowed to cry, it is that women are allowed to cry – I have a problem, I know, I’ll make a horrible sound until someone else comes and helps me. Children do it because they can’t help themselves and they need an adult to help them, but we are meant to believe that women are entirely capable of being independent and looking after themselves, not babies that need constant looking after.

I think you’ve harmed things by deliberately lying about what Jessica Valenti has said. There exists plenty that she has said which can get used to show what she is really like.
With respect to her “I bathe in male tears” shirt she said “I took a special picture for all the misogynist whiners in my feed today.”
That she cavalierly calls those who disagree with her misogynists indicates that she will call anything misogyny that she doesn’t like. That she also calls such people “whiners” indicates a double standard, because she is more than happy to complain about things she doesn’t like… yet she doesn’t seek to mock herself as a “whiner” nor does she claim that “she bathes in (her own) female tears”.
She posted three images to Angry Harry’s page on July 27th basically mocking him, including one with a baby crying.
She also had this to say about “Women Against Feminism” “Sort of amazing how many “women” joined twitter the day #WomenAgainstFeminism started. CURIOUS.” https://twitter.com/JessicaValenti/status/493473521851314176 That such indicates misogyny on her part should come as apparent.
I could go into how lying about her makes things bad for male advocates, but I hope that clear enough. And there is no need to make such lies either, since what she says and does once put in a proper light makes it clear that there exists plenty that she has said that discredits herself.

I understand your qualms and I will add that using Poe’s Law is pretty bog-standard technique on Twitter. Of the three quotes I posted, two were fake and one was real (abortion shouldn’t be rare is a real quote) and you can’t tell which is which – that is what Poe’s Law is designed to illustrate. There is also the legal doctrine of unclean hands that dictates it is legally acceptable to respond to people who are morally or ethically questionable with tactics that would otherwise be illegal.
Ultimately, I wanted to goad Valenti into responding to me, which she did and if she chooses to publicize me in the Guardian, it will provide a platform to discuss the real issue: her tshirt and her callous indifference to the suffering of men, not to mention her use of the word “male” as a synonym for “misogynist”.
I appreciate your concerns though, and recognize them as valid.
Thank you for posting a comment. You may always feel free to criticize my public actions. Rest assured that I am ultimately driven by the mission: equality for men and boys, and I will do whatever I can to protect that mission.

This is at best tangential, but after reading the “piece” Valenti wrote, I’m torn. I’m a believer that abortion should probably be happening more often, as part of as you might say “women owning their own shit”; it is inevitable that if men get reproductive rights more abortions will happen, and for a variety of reasons ranging from social justice to economics to child welfare to anti-poverty there should be more abortions when contraception fails. However, what Valenti wrote was vapid and superficial, with easily refuted examples, like actually doctors and other health policy people do want to see fewer bypass surgeries, it means people are taking better care of themselves, likewise if there are fewer abortions it may mean people are making better decisions about sex and family planning. We should want there to be fewer abortions or bypasses, meaning people are behaving better, with an eye towards good health. We don’t need to advocate for more bypasses because there aren’t large numbers of people with heart disease trying to treat it with just prayers or dianetics.

Clearly you haven’t been on the comments section of The Guardian… One of the things that probably started me down the track of actively working against feminism was their comments section, which is patrolled by (seemingly) hardline feminist mods. I once had my entire side of a discussion about the whole violence against women vs violence against people deleted, especially the one where the lady repeatedly asked me for proof that men are ever the victims of DV, and I repeatedly replied with a link to an article ON THE GUARDIAN pointing to more balanced stats…
Trust me, The Guardian will never allow itself to be a platform for anything but the demonisation of anything not pro-feminist…

Holy cow, look at that woman’s right hand. It’s not a perfect angle but it sure looks like she has an enormous ring finger, even longer than her middle finger. A 2D-4D finger ratio like that is often observed among top female athletes, i.e. the most aggressive, hard charging, least feminine identifying women around. It’s no surprise she’s out fighting men, and loves the idea of slut culture, she probably thinks and feels more like they do than she is ever likely to admit.

I read this yesterday and thought your reply was great. I am a lover of sarcasm.
However today I looked again and felt that sick felling in my gut that tells me that that something is much worse than originally thought.
I think Dr. T. should get on this case since Jessica Valenti appears to be a psychopath.
It took me a whole day to realize the depth of this depravity. The enjoyment of others suffering is just evil and she is celebrating it on her t-shirt. Just as there is a direct line between the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence there is a direct line between “Boys are stupid, Throw rocks at them” and Jessica’s shit (Yeah I forgot the R but I will let it stand) but in the opposite direction.
This has to be called out (as in diagnosed) by a doctor for the clinical illness that it is.

Sorry, but people who feel comfortable talking publicly about psychological issues had best be psychologists, or at least someone who doesn’t show their profound lack of insight into the workings of the human mind every time they open their mouths to diagnose anyone over a single event.
Seriously, diagnosis over one event, or even one aspect of a persons life is, well… The nicest way I can put it is that it’s so fundamentally wrong as to call into question your ability to tie shoelaces…
Seriously, put down your misread (and heavily discredited) DSM V, and realise you’d be like most people who actually try to study psychology, and drop out in the first year…

I wasn’t aware psychology had such a low second year matriculation rate. Two questions do you have a preferred source to back that up if google is confused as it often is by a thoughtful question, and two, what are suspected reasons for this? How much of it is the department overaccepting freshmen they knew they weren’t going to matriculate, and how much is quiting?

Oh noes, I got called out on my hyperbolic statement… My source was my mum, who worked at a university for years, so pretty poor quality, source wise. Third party, anecdotal at best. Now that I’ve fronted up, where’s that psychology degree?
Oh, incidentally, did I say major? As I understood it (from my untrustable source), psych was one of the hardest courses to get a slot in in first year, due to every teenager wanting to know who they are and how they work. It was posited by the same source that this very information was what made them end up dropping out. It was the notion I was alluding to in my snark in the first place.
People love using half-understood or misunderstood pop=psych to belittle and scold those they disagree with, but if they knew what psychology had to say about them, they’d stop using psychology to try to insult others. There’s quite literally no such thing as sane, everyone has their own issues, flaws and such, along with holding the universal flaws we share, such as emotions, communication issues, confirmation bias, and either thinking we’re better than anyone else thinks we are, or being prone to depression.
Also, I live in Australia, so for all I know, my semi-ignorant pronouncement holds true here. In any case, I still hold to my insult, that anyone who believes themselves qualified to speak on matters of psychology without having trained in it almost certainly lack the ability to be any good at it. Shit, half the people who do practice it don’t understand it properly…

I actually share your skepticism of psychology/pop-psychology and the DSM, the only thing in your statement I was questioning was the second year drop out rate being at least 50%. Another Amerocentric source I found, the New York Times, had a puff piece from 2011, which suggested that high dropout rates in STEM fields led primarily by pre-med students, is the result of passive study of difficult abstract quantitative topics. I don’t think that psychology should be considered part of the STEM fields but it usually is, mostly so feminists can criticize male dominated natural and applied science fields for sexism by using data from female dominated social and life sciences.

That was brilliantly done research that any scientist should be proud of, so I’m disturbed by how absurd and incompetent the conclusions she came up with (because she assumed them) were. I almost wonder if she was making an attempt at Colbert like irony, when he said that “reality had a liberal bias”, maybe her conclusion that “nature is sexist because men and women are different” was actually tongue in cheek. After all, even if the preferred method for female brains to resolve depth perception were easier to study and replicate, immersive technologies would either have to be gendered or have a gender toggle, which would still leave evidence that men and women were different.
Also my computer or internet is acting up, if you got a response from me that made no sense, I’m sorry, I don’t know why the system is tryong to make all my responses go to Linda M, or is telling me so, but if the response is weird assume it’s for someone else.

Oh, while I’m skeptical of everything, there’s a shitload of really good science being done in psychology of late… If you really want to look for pseudoscience, look to psychiatrists, who are the ones who are in charge of the DSM
As for 50%, I’m guilty as charged of the age-old crime of putting a percentage to a guestimate… Still, not a lot of people make it, in particular thanks to the high math requirement. If you can’t understand stats, you can’t make it through, which still troubles me, as there are people who base their therapies on some of the most statistically insignificant and loaded studies…
And then there are those who claim to be psych professionals when they’re just “addiction counselors”…

Still, the important point was that I wouldn’t trust someone with multiple psych PhD’s diagnosing someone with something as extreme (and potentially difficult to diagnose) as psychopathy/sociopathy based on a shirt they wore in a twitter picture. Seriously, if someone being hurtful online is the qualifying feature of that diagnosis, then we’ve got to reevaluate whether it’s even aberrant psychology…

Eh, crying happens to everyone. I’ve known men who cry, crying isn’t about ‘grabbing attention’ (or just grabbing attention), otherwise, why would people literally cry with laughter?
I know when I get angry I’m more likely to tear up. Why? Because I feel angry and I don’t really want to engage in a conflict which will only escalate because I’m angry. Crying is therapeutic, and a symptom of unhappiness that will go away when you’re actually able to cope with the feelings that caused the unhappiness, and they can be chronic or acute. That’s not to say you have to, but as a cryer, it’s fucking embarrassing and not something us prone to crying generally want to do in public.
But fighting feminism with a unwavering view of macho manliness “Everyone should show as little emotion as possible” is probably not the best idea for humanity.
