I am grateful every day for my husband, my father, my brother, and all the other wonderful men out there who’ve sweated, created, and risked their lives to make a world where we can be comfortable, safe, secure, and connected to all kinds of exciting knowledge and experiences.
When I say that I support equality, I’m not saying that there will ever be any two people with identical levels of intelligence, love, passion, or any other quality or skill. I’m talking about the kind of equality that says, for example, that a mentally and physically disabled person has the same right to love, warmth, and the good things in life as the world’s most brilliant surgeon.
It’s also important to have equality of opportunity, which has nothing to do with having fifty percent women and fifty percent men in every field, and everything to do with encouraging our children and young people to follow their own interests and do the stuff they love doing without regard for gender norms. Because some women make excellent surgeons and some men make excellent caregivers, so we should uphold everyone’s freedom to live out their own destinies.

Hia! I’m a electrician so I found this a bit fitting to comment on.
Here in Norway we have this big trash throwing party all year long. It’s about how few men that are nurses, dentists, kindergarten/grade-school teacher etc. What one would call a female working place. And to handle this “issue” if you are a man and enters the female territory you get more money, vise versa. But that have made the equality about doing the same job and earning the same more of a issue. You don’t hear any of the guys at my work say ” she earns more than me, and we do the same job thats not right!”. But if you ask a woman she will say it’s a big issue… Why? I do not know.

It’s probably because those female-dominated fields go more hand-in-hand with most women’s actual interests, so knowing that they could make a lot more than a male engineer is no comfort if they’re not interested in math, and would rather care for little kids…but I think it’s very cool of the guys in the male-dominated fields that they don’t mind the females in those fields making more than them. I’m impressed.

I listened to Emma Watsons speech yesterday, and am am awaiting the MHRAs reactions. This was a good first comment JB, and yeah the text you read is one of my favorite too.
Although Feminists will use these numbers as proof that “men is holding women back”.
But just today I skimmed over an article in a Norwagian paper talking about hunting, and how nearly no women hunt. And apparently it’s us men’s job to get more women to hunt.
As much as I welcome any woman who wants to do whatever to do thatever, I don’t see how it’s my job to cater to her.
PS: Besides hunting is for a lot of men an important escapism from daily life, I doubt most hunters want to bring their wife along for that.

Probably seems “wrong” not to be especially cared for as a female. While guys are kinda ok with being “extra nice” to women in a male dominated sphere.

Most powerful banker in Europe is a Spanish female: Ana Botín.
Vice president of the Gobernment is a female.
50% of the people in the Parliament is female.
50% of the judges are female.
30% of ministers in the Government are female.
30% of cops are female.
30% of the military are female.
40% of majors are female.
And all that has nothing to do with “positive discrimination”, at all, cuz it never worked here. There is a lot of feminist shit in this country but not “positive discrimination”, that is true.
So, that means that “positive discrimination” is unnecessary and bullshit.

Last news from here:
Conservative minister of Justice, has resigned from charge due he could not go on with new abortion law. He was facing (and all the Goverment) an extreme unpopularity due to the plan. Most people in this country (even Catholics) are quite tolerant when it comes to abortion.
This is the (frustrated) new law: to ban the law before, which allows preggo women to abort legally during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
Minister was pressed by radical Catholics -he is not a radical- to push the situation to “abortion ZERO”.
Not the minister neither the Spanish radical Catholics have read St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas, both Doctors of the Church: abortion is not homicide within the first 40 days of pregnancy. Because before 40 days we cannot talk about the embryo as a human being.

So you think the Norwegian male response, of not minding if women are getting paid more for the same kind and amount of work, is typical to all males everywhere? My grandfather was a foreman for a steel company in the Midwestern U.S. during the early-to-mid 20th century, and I recall him telling me that the men didn’t appreciate the rare female employee who got the same pay as the men but rested while the men unloaded the truck for her.
I realize that in Norway, it’s not a case of women getting paid the same while doing less work, but rather, of women getting paid more while doing the same work — but it seems like a similar concept.

It’s simple:
A privilege is something that is given to you.
A right is something that is taken away from you.
And not having anyone stop you from doing something, is not the same as having a right to do that thing. I’m allowed to eat steak, and doing so makes me happy, but steak is not a basic human right: If I stay at a hotel and there is no steak on the menu, they are not denying me my human rights.
I have no right to another person’s love, because that would infringe on other people’s right to chose whom they love (if anyone).

Thanks for making that point! I probably made my previous post too open to interpretation. I was just referring to the fact that many of us who promote equal rights and opportunities for all people aren’t assuming that any two people are going to be equal in terms of qualities or capabilities. But we are all still of equal value as human beings. And I don’t think this kind of value has anything to do with what kind of job we hold or how important it is to society.
I fully I agree that if I don’t give any English lessons today, the world will be just fine. But my not going to work would be a big deal if I was the only one in my city who knew how to do an intricate surgical procedure, and someone was rushed into the ER needing that procedure pronto. The latter job is more valuable, but people are a whole lot more than just their jobs and skills.

I have heard that Danish culture is less competitive than U.S. culture, and I wonder if this is also true of Norwegian culture. It seems so alien to me to imagine ANYONE, male or female, having no problem with being paid less simply because of their gender.

When I worked in the service industry, the girls got a lot more tips than the boys. Didn’t complain, people can do what they want with their own money.

Well, duh…but I think you know I’m talking about something different. You would seriously have no problem with a government policy that mandated paying people of one gender more than people of the other gender?

Of course I’d have a problem with that. I have a problem with the government telling anyone what they can/can not do with their own money.
But if an employer wanted to have such a policy, then I just wouldn’t work for them (if they paid the men less) – or I would work for them (if they paid the men more). They can spend their own money however they like.

To clarify:
I’d have no more of a problem with the government saying you must pay one gender more than the other, than I would with them saying you must pay both genders the same amount.

Oh I get it. You’re just not in favor of the government having any say in how business owners choose to run their companies.
My original comment about this was actually directed towards the poster who said that Norwegian men in traditionally male industries had no problem with a law requiring their employers to pay female employees more. Scandinavian cultures are just very fascinating to me.
What the poster said about the Norwegian women in traditionally female industries not liking it that male employees got paid more seems more like natural human nature, especially coupled with the fact that traditionally female jobs like child care tend to be very low-paying, at least here in the States.
