Buzzfeed’s balls are firmly in feminism’s purse

6 Apr

Buzzfeed Community is a place where anyone can post anything they like. Community posts are buried so deep in the site’s architecture that it’s basically impossible to find them unless you have the specific link. I put up two articles over there in Community and passed out the links, so the posts got viewed quite a lot. The general idea behind the site is that posts that generate a lot of buzz get shifted (at the discretion of editors) to the feed, and can subsequently end up mainpaged, hence the name Buzzfeed.

Buzzfeed automatically generated emails to me when my first post was viewed one thousand times, and then again when it was viewed ten thousand times, earning me some “rewards”.

rewards

When the second post went up, the emails stopped and I have heard not a peep from Buzzfeed since then. I can see from my own blog that the links have been viewed over 1K times from my site alone, but it seems like the powers that be at Buzz don’t wike me.

Janet is scary! New ideas are frightening! They don’t want to know how many people share my thoughts. La la la I can’t hear you….

Oh  well. I kind of knew that would happen, but it’s somewhat amusing to see it confirmed. I must be the only community user with thousands upon thousands of views that the editors are just ignoring. Likely someone is super pissed that even within the Buzzfeed community, the response to both articles has been positive.

reaction

I was testing whether or not Buzzfeed has a business model, or if the editors are motivated purely by ideology. Buzzfeed needs to figure out which side of history it wants to be on, and whether thinking critically about gender issues will deliver them eyeballs for advertisers.

Or they can prepare to die.

I’m waiting for my new piece to go up at Thought Catalog, where editors aren’t terrified of new ideas and are willing, able and ready to engage with reality and not just ideology. I’ll post a link when it’s up.  In the meantime, enjoy this video of a woman beating the crap out of her boyfriend for texting another girl, and watch what happens when he fights back.

Patriarchy: delivering male privilege one psycho bitch at a time.

Lots of love,

JB

I’m glad you’re getting so many responses over at Buzzfeed! Hopefully they’ll have enough sense to allow for freedom of speech even if they’re scared of what feminists may do to them.

About the double standards with domestic violence, and anti-male double standards in general, I was very excited the other day in the car with my almost 15-year-old daughter who identifies as feminist. We were listening to the radio when Meghan Trainor’s song “Dear Future Husband” song came on and my daughter said she couldn’t stand the song because it was so sexist against men.

Yes, my daughter rightly assessed it as being all about how the woman can act however she wants, and it’s okay because she’s the woman. Now it’s just a matter of her “connecting the dots” and seeing the double standard of “women good, men bad” played out in so many areas of feminist philosophy.

She has noticed the inaccuracy in a lot of the frenzy over 50 shades (I’ll probably catch a lot of flack for this, but I took her to see the movie when it came out because she really wanted to see it, and rather than censoring what my kids can see, I talk with them and express my concerns if they want to see or read something that I think might be too much for them, and since she still really wanted to see it, I took her myself so I could be there with her in case she needed any help processing what she was seeing, and so I could get her out of there if it was really disturbing her).

Anyhow, while she didn’t see it as a healthy relationship, she seriously didn’t get all the people thinking it was non-consensual.

I would do that, too, if my daughter asked. She is not interested in the slightest, though. She loves her Warrior Cats books (like Watership Down but with cats instead of rabbits).

Maybe they only send the mail out the first time. Otherwise, a popular author would get an avalanche of “people like this!” every time they put something up.

I thought that song was a joke, reading the lyrics. Then I found this quote she made to Seventeen magazine (according to Wikipedia). “It’s like, ‘I’m awesome, why would you not want to marry me and date me?”

The answer is likely because you declare your awesomeness, and make it the basis for why you should get princess treatment, with no apparent desire to cater to someone else’s irrational desires.

This is the girl who’s biggest hit is a song about how she is fat.

You think she’s fat? She seems to me like the perfect hourglass, though I’m not saying this “awesomeness” translates into a free pass for her to be a jerk and still get princess treatment.

It’s kind of like Jennifer Lawrence saying she’s fat by Hollywood standards, when she actually possesses the classically perfect curves that other female celebrities are getting silicone injections to create.

She is young, so she doesn’t look as horrible now as she will eventually, but she has been unquestionably fat. She does hide it well, but she can’t hide those fat legs (or manjaw for that matter). Her weight has fluctuated significantly as well. Compare her to the men in her videos. She’d crush them.

She’s nowhere near as fat as the girl on the right, but look at the girl on the left. That girl is curvy and not “fat” like Meghan is:

The link you gave me of Meghan Trainer doesn’t show her as “unquestionably fat” in my opinion. It sounds like it’s really just a matter of personal preference. For example, the woman at the link you showed me on the left to “what men define as curvy” is definitely attractive, but there are lots of other women within healthy weight ranges who don’t look anything like that, and that’s okay, too. For example, were the woman on the right to get within a healthy weight range, I think she’d still look very different from the woman on the left.

As far as you saying that Trainer doesn’t look “as horrible” as she will when she gets older — there’s nothing wrong with you not being attracted to this particular woman’s shape and looks — but why on earth does something you don’t personally want to bang have to be “horrible?”

Of course it comes down to personal preference, but that doesn’t make her less fat. She is the female version of this guy. If he shaved and was dressed in something a little more stylish/fitting and was walking around, he’d look decent, but he’d still be fat.

Now you’re bringing the “healthy” weight ranges argument into it. She can be in a relatively healthy weight range and still be fat. Most major health problems occur when people are even fatter than she is, no doubt. However, this doesn’t preclude her from being fat.

With regards to the woman on the right in my example, she would likely have to lose 100+ lbs to get into a healthy weight range and of course she would look drastically different than the woman on the left because she’d have excess skin everywhere on her body from the weight loss.

She’s not horrible now, but if she continues to live the lifestyle that has netted her the current body type, she’ll look awful in ten years. If she puts her newfound money into a personal training regimen and healthy diet she’ll have a chance. I suppose what I think is horrible about her is that she thinks it’s men’s fault for preferring in shape women and that fat = curves.

Also, you failed to address my suggestion that if you compare her to the men in her videos, she would crush them. Another easy to spot example as to why she’s considered “fat.” She thinks she deserves a thin/in shape man because she considers herself “awesome.”

Well, that’s fine if she does end up landing such a man, but to believe that men should change their general preferences for her because she’s “awesome” is just “delusional.”

Also, it’s Meghan Trainor. It would be ironic if her last name was “Trainer.”

“Now you’re bringing the ‘healthy’ weight ranges argument into it. She can be in a relatively healthy weight range and still be fat.”

So a person can be a healthy weight and still be what you call fat? I define “fat” as carrying more weight than is healthy for your particular frame and height. For each height, there’s a range of approximately 23 lbs. that’s considered healthy. I’d guess that the attractive model you linked to to show what men approve of is at the lower end of the healthy weight range for her height, and Trainer is at the higher end of the range. I still don’t see her as outside the healthy range.

And there’s nothing wrong with you preferring women at the lower end of the range.

“I suppose what I think is horrible about her is that she thinks it’s men’s fault for preferring in shape women and that fat = curves.”

I certainly don’t agree with all Trainor’s songs, but at least from what I’ve read of her so far, I haven’t seen her blame men for their preferences. I also don’t think she perceives herself as an out-of-shape woman. I certainly don’t perceive her that way — and honestly, I do perceive her as curvy. And she looks like a person who gets exercise — but you and I certainly have a right to have different opinions as to whether she exercises.

And again, it’s OKAY that she’s not your type!

“Also, you failed to address my suggestion that if you compare her to the men in her videos, she would crush them. Another easy to spot example as to why she’s considered ‘fat.’ She thinks she deserves a thin/in shape man because she considers herself ‘awesome.'”

There are both men and women who prefer partners with very different body shapes than their own. I know of at least a couple of thin men who prefer having someone a little rounder to snuggle up against. One of these guys said he didn’t enjoy bone hitting bone. 🙂

And of course, some tiny women like big hulks of men, and some big hulks of men like tiny women. Rather than saying, “What right to they have to think they’re ‘awesome’ enough to land the sort of person they’re attracted to?” — I just figure they’ll either find someone of that type who likes them, too, or they’ll end up finding someone who doesn’t quite match that type but who they’re happy with anyway, or they’ll stay single and keep holding out for that perfect person. It’s okay with me if they think they’re “awesome.”

As far as the guy in the photo, he’s overweight, sure, but he doesn’t seem unattractive or awful to me. If he chose to only date in-shape women, what is that to me? A guy with a bit of a paunch, or a woman with a few extra pounds (again, I don’t see Trainor as being in that category) preferring slim partners is fine with me. They’ll either land such a partner or they won’t, and, again, it’s fine if they think they’re awesome. 🙂

Okay, so if the stats I’ve found are correct, Trainor is about 7 lbs. overweight for her height. I think people of all sizes have the “right” to feel hot and to sing about it if they want to — and, of course, others have the right to decide whether to date them and/or purchase and listen to their music. I used to have a crush on John Candy, though of course I’m sad that his weight killed him. He was somewhat more overweight than Trainor, though.

Oh, that is so cool! And of course, it speaks to the fact that people of every body type have the right to feel “perfect” in their own skin.

And again, as I keep reiterating, everyone has the right to be attracted to what they’re attracted to — and not to date what they’re not attracted to. Women griping about men not liking their body type are just as bad as men griping about women not liking their level of wealth and ambition.

If a man made a song about a real woman caring more about a man’s heart than his wallet, I wouldn’t be the least bit offended. Why should I? Of course, I happen to be one of the women who cares more about spiritual wealth than economic wealth, so I’d probably like that singer. I imagine that if I were one of the women who only cared about money, I’d feel judged and say, “Who is he to say I’m not a real woman?!” And I’d probably insist that all women were just like me but just didn’t have the balls to admit it. 🙂

But really, to each his or her own. Go after what attracts you, and just accept that there’s always going to be judgment — even those who look more at the heart get accused of “settling.” If someone is trying to make you feel guilty, just determine for yourself whether or not you have anything to feel guilty about, and live your life accordingly.

I agree with this completely Susan. People are attracted to what they are attracted to, period. The only mistake is marrying someone you are NOT attracted to in the hopes that person will change. They won’t.

  25. that1susan April 9, 2015 at 15:08 #

Exactly. Except that sometimes people feel a strong attraction to their complete opposite, and then end up getting completely frustrated with the qualities that initially attracted them.

For example, a driven, type A woman may be attracted to a laid back, type B guy but end up frustrated by his lack of ambition. Likewise, a guy who’s very physically active may be attracted to a totally laid-back, non-athletic woman but end up frustrated by her laid-back response to the way that the passing of the years shows up in her face and body.

In both cases, the results of being laid-back tend to stand out more later than in the beginning, as a non-ambitious man of 22 may be in a similar place career-wise and financially to his peers, and a sedentary woman of 22 may still look pretty good (and indeed, a sedentary woman who doesn’t have a love affair with food can often continue to look fairly good well into old age).

I tried linking the CDC BMI index on here last week but apparently that comment didn’t display.

According to the CDC chart, she is 14 pounds overweight. And that is in bright line context – as in, 14 pounds over the highest weight for “normal.”

The chart you are looking at is provided by “ygraph” and doesn’t appear to have any data source for its figures. I’m not aware of its “frame size” distinctions and it seems they were created to arbitrarily raise the “normal” weight range over generally accepted BMI calculations.

5’2″ and 150 (or 175, as widely reported on various websites), is certainly overweight. 175 is obese (BMI of 32, 30 is obese).

And yeah, my girlfriend, the most driven person I’ve ever known, was drawn to my laid back nature and “loves that about me.” Now, she sometimes gets upset at how slow I’m moving when I’m in her way.

Yeah looking at the chart, where 120lbs is the median “Normal” BMI for 5’2.” Shakira, according to the healthyceleb site you posted, is 5’2″ and 117lbs. She looks healthy, and is very curvy, with a 24″ waist and 37″ hips. Imagine coating her with 33 boxes of butter (132 sticks, 33 lbs of fat) to bring her up to the low end of reported Meghan Trainor weight…
