Well, well, well. Mr. Manboobz himself backs down. Isn’t that interesting?

Following hard on the heels of Kate Harding admitting that, oh, oops, those pesky MRAs might actually have a few things right, and then absurdly, taking credit for bringing attention to the issues, we have David Futrelle himself backing down.

http://manboobz.com/2013/03/05/a-kitten-and-a-question-are-mras-right-about-anything/comment-page-2/#comments

Are MRAs right about anything, he wants to know? And then proceeds to answer his own question, focusing on three teeny little areas of inequality and abuse suffered by men:

  1. They tend to get raped in equal measure to women
  2. They get locked up way more often than women
  3. They tend to be victims of domestic violence

Hey, no bigggies, eh? What’s a little ass-fucking when you’ve been jailed because your wife beat the shit out of you?

The first two commenters also note that mutilating little boy’s genitals while treating little girl’s genitals as sacred might be another thing MR’s get fussed about.

I’ll throw one out, here: Cosmetic Infant Male Circumcision.

And they understand that treating men as walking wallets might also cause a little tension.

MRAs are trivially right about the fact that traditional gender roles put a lot of pressure on men to be materially successful, which is distressing to men who don’t feel comfortable in such a role, who would feel comfortable in it if they could manage to fulfill it, or who have fulfilled it and structure their entire identity around continuing to do so.

Trivially right about the fact that half of humanity is not a tool the other half can use like drillbits? Such insight! How do they manage it!

Don’t get too excited, though. While all these issues might actually be a legitimate cause for concern, the MHRM is not the group we want seeking remedies.

Their [MRAs] whole attitude is “women should be returned to slavery, raped and beaten” and everything they say is steeped in that poison. It nullifies anything useful they might accidentally say.

Goodness me! What shall I make of all the women commenters on this blog who would like me to get raped and murdered? Are they secretly MRAs?

After several more commenters spewing hatred and bile, we finally get to a few more Manboobzers who see that yeah, well, maybe divorce and custody laws could use some changing.

divorce

Divorce and child custody is a problem, and I do know men who don’t get to see their children anywhere near as often as they would like

Oh yeah, and the education system is failing boys.

And their points about education have some basis in a real problem – boys are not well served by an educational system that is overstressed so that each teacher has upwards of 30 students in the class. In that case, teachers do tend to reward behavior that helps keep order in the classroom, like sitting quietly and paying attention, which girls are socialized to do (as well as being generally socialized to try to please authority figures…)

Plus there’s that whole not having a say in whether they want to be parents thing.

I think there’s a genuine issue with men not having a say in the outcome if they get a woman pregnant and then being forced to pay child support for a child they didn’t want to have.

And then even when men ARE parents, they are assumed to be secondary to mothers or even irrelevant.

daddy

I would have sympathy for a humane father’s rights movement, because it would of necessity be fighting against the oppressive gender roles that say only women can be good caregivers especially of small children and that all men are incompetent parents.

The good news is that the message is out there, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for even the most ardent, strident of feminists to deny it.

Men and boys are being denied some very basic human rights.

Naturally, feminism will try to lay claim to the territory as a strategy to remain relevant. Our job is to make sure that doesn’t happen. As the ideas raised by the MHRM become more and more mainstream, the chorus of voices becomes more and more important.

chorus

“First they ignore you, then they mock you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Arthur Schopenhauer

Looks like we’re moving ever closer to the win.

Not much a surprise, really. It’s what men tend to do.

Win.

win

With a little help from their judgy, bitchy friends.

Lots of love,

JB

Figures he would fail such a blatant shit-test in an epic manner. Most of the MRBeta/Omega movement is trying to reason with Satan. Feminists think they can hold society hostage by rearranging the pile. Men need to demonstrate that Feminists hold no power over them by covering the societal pile in gasoline and standing by with a lit torch.

They think things can actually be fixed by being nice and reasonable discussions. Shows what they actually know about women. A stiff backhanding to a Feminist then being sent to the kitchen to make sammiches followed by a trip to Poundtown would accomplish several decades worth of MRA political advocacy.
Feminism is just a movement of women who are angry that they never got the disciplining they so desperately knew they deserved.

Wow, ar10308, this kind of commenting doesn’t really help.

    Backhanding? Make sammiches? Poundtown?

Come on, dude. There are plenty of honest, legitmate critiques to make about feminism, but they’re all bitches who need to be slapped into the kitchen and then fucked isn’t exactly one of them.

    😦

    Of course there are.
But legitimate arguments and critiques are ignored because they contain no emotions. And I was speaking metaphorically of course.

And now men are worth being considered because Feminists are starting consider some of them worth listening too? Sorry, men don’t need their validation or sympathy. Being weak by validating and sympathizing with these types of women is how we arrived here in the first place.

    Ok.

    Thanks for clarifying.

And I agree. For feminists to suddenly take interest in men’s inequality is pretty rich.

The correct response is to tell them to go fuck themselves.

Exactly. Any ground given to them to have reign over is control they will exercise for their benefit. Giving them any kind of leverage to maintain power is a very bad thing. They must be utterly removed from it. Your Princess Leia post explains their role to perfection.

Just like making more laws for investment banks to follow only empowers the most corrupt, politically connected and flagrantly immoral banks. It doesn’t help the small guy get better but imposes huge hinderances for him to overcome. The big banks can get away with murder BECAUSE of the laws, not in spite of them.

One of the reasons I ended up in the MRA-sphere is because feminism has infiltrated everything and I’m fed up with it. I’ve been doing fantasy/scifi book reviews for the better part of a decade and over the last couple of years the handwringing and accusations of “patriarchy,” “colonialism,” “sexism,” and “racism” have gotten deafening. Naturally misandry doesn’t exist in their worldview.

Of course the answer to everything is to point the finger at men (mostly white men) and demand that they make everything better (in this world the men are supposed to be “supporting” female writers by only buying and reviewing titles written by women). Men are supposed to do all the heavy lifting (as always) and when you point out the weakness inherent in asking men to do all the work the shrillness goes through the roof. You’d think I was evil for suggesting that maybe it’s up to women to support other women if the argument can be made that there is a real problem in the first place. You cannot reason with people who only operate on emotion.

And you hit it on the nail about “trigger warnings” the other day. I’m so freaking tired of hearing about triggers…

The reason I bring this up is because I totally agree that the only way to deal with feminists and their demands is to tell them to STFU.

there’s a quote i saw that pretty sums all this up : first they deny it, then they say it is immoral, then they say they knew it all along (that might not be all of it, it’s been a while since i’ve seen that so i don’t remember all of it). and what is futrelle gonna call the movement that latches on to the points “accidentally” discovered by the MHRM when it currently is full of horrid misogynists, rapists, and oppressive murderers? i can almost guarantee that he will end up joining the men’s movement soon after his feminist overlords start losing the public even more, if not soon after this.

Well, at root though, when it comes to the important things, it isn’t really about validation. To the extent that feminists start listening to men is important for the tangible things that are at stake: the rights of fathers, the education of boys, the deficit of funding in male health concerns, and workplace injuries and deaths. People suffering from such issues aren’t akin to those of us arguing over the internet for self-esteem points or whatever.

In real life, men and boys do in fact need feminists to start listening to them. “They are holding all the keys and guarding all the doors,” to quote Morpheus’s description of the ‘agents.’

That is, of course, until feminist dominance in many bureaucracies and institutions can be successfully replaced. But it was after all, ‘male chauvinists’ who first started giving women rights, whites who first started giving black people rights, and capitalist ‘robber-barons’ who first started giving the workers rights. Invariably, it seems, one has to garner attention and sympathy (or fear) from one’s erstwhile enemy to get anything done before one can get a caucus of one’s own. Only then can one tell anyone to ‘go fuck themselves’ in any meaningful sense.

I don’t call a suicide rate four times that of women winning.

Doubtless men only commit suicide at such high rates because of how guilty they feel about oppressing women. You just need to practice your mental gymnastics, then you’ll understand.

Last I checked, though it was a few years ago) the increased rate at which men successfully commit suicide is roughly similar to the increased rate at which women attempt suicide and has more to do with choice of method (guns vs pills) than cause for motivation to kill oneself.

    To be really pedantic:

Schopenhauer said that “all truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” It is a rough equivalent, but not exactly the same. The quote you gave is often attributed to Ghandi, although there apparently is no record of him saying those words. It is however in the the spirit of his views on non-violent protest.

    That’s interesting.

It’s a great example of how when a mistruth gets repeated often enough, it becomes accepted as truth.

Women earn $0.77 for every $1.00 men earn. Bullshit.
1 in 4 women is sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Bullshit

Keep hearing it over and over again, and it begins to sound true.

That’s why I disagree with Schopenhauer on that one, unless you put “truth” in quotes. His mistake is thinking that the evolution of human thought is always towards an objective truth. We know historically this is not the case: the middle ages saw a regression in mathematical knowledge to give only one example.

As for Ghandi’s quote, it is indeed the way non-violent protests work, and that’s also how feminism won. There is some assumption that the cause being fought for is somehow objectively just, but it doesn’t need to be, it just has to persuade the people.

I will interpret feminist opposition to the MRM for you: they have committed vile acts of discrimination and aggression and, in a feeble attempt to deflect blame, charge Mens Rights Activists with the same ills.

Deflect and distract are tools of the feminist trade. Don’t be surprised that Manboobz follows this playbook.

I noticed he hasn’t been responding to many of your counter points or to AVfM. I think he can’t find a way to downplay reality any more. You know as a door to door sales men I get to read people and the areas they live. If you can’t give them something new and better than the last time then you better run.
